Guest Post - How to Care for your Nails with Polished by Leanne

Before I get into this post, I just wanted to say a big thank you to Lisa for asking me to guest on her wonderful blog!

Today I just wanted to share a few hints and tips that I've learnt about nail care over the years with you.. I used to be a biter, it's a hard habit to break, but once you do, you'll never look back! I'm so proud of how far my nails have come along.

I don't particularly have a routine, but here are a few do’s and don’t’s I stick to…

  • Moisturise and look after those cuticles. You don't have to spend a fortune doing this, my cuticle oil of choice is by Apothaka Skincare, I use it at least twice a day, and it has significantly improved my nail and surrounding area’s health.

  • Moisturise the hands too! No point having lovely well conditioned nails on crispy dry hands haha!

  • Use a crystal nail file. This will allow you to file backwards and forwards without damaging or tearing your nail tips, making for easier shaping of the nail.

  • Always wear a base coat when applying coloured nail polish to prevent/lessen staining.

  • Use your nails as tools. We are all guilty of this, myself included, but the less you do it the better.

  • Peel nail polish off. This strips the nail, fight the urge to pick until you have access to a non acetone remover.

  • Cut your cuticles! I know some nail salons do this, but in my opinion, a quick soak and push back with a rubber cuticle pusher is much better for the health of the nail. They are there to fight off infection amongst other things, keep them well moisturised and all will be well.

  • Bite! Haha…you knew this was coming right?! Find a way to break the habit, you can do it! Think of all the nasty germs that can collect under the nails, you don't want to be chomping away at them do you!

If you follow me on Instagram, you will know how I'm rarely without polish on my nails. I find that wearing polish most days has helped to protect my nails at work, they break less and grow quicker. I do give them a few days off though - it's good to let air get to them every now and again. If I'm not working, I'll have a ‘naked nail’ day, where I lather them in my cuticle oil, apply generous amounts of hand cream throughout the day, and just let them breathe.

I hope that these pointers have been useful for you, and help you with your nail journey!

Thank you so much for reading, if you enjoyed this post, please come and find me over on my blog for more nails and beauty.

Love, Leanne Xx
